Discover Madame: The French Street Artist who juggles with words & images!
1 July 2019Madame, for me, it’s an impromptu meeting at the corner of a street in my little Parisian district. Discovering a French Street Artist at the corner of your house, especially when you live in the north of Paris at La Chapelle, it’s not happening every day! Moreover, an artist quite different from Street Art that we usually see.
“Madame” does not do pocket size! It’s the least we can say ! With her giant formats she distills an urban poetry out of the ordinary, she doesn’t tag! She sticks, she maroufle, as the posters of the late nineteenth century!
She can be described as modern art poster. From old documents and photographs of the 50s or 60s; she invents an extravagant writing, a bit crazy ,with lots of poetry and some touches of esotericism!
But that’s not all; these rather spectacular posters that can already be read and interpreted in a thousand ways; Madame adds her “Punchline”, a quote of her own, with a sharp pen, which often makes me smile like when I read Jacques Prévert!
The crime scene is in the heart of the Chapelle district, Place de Torcy!
Like I told you; this discovery has become over time like a “gimmick” … Will there be a new “Madame” when I go for a walk at the Olive’s Fresh market? Here are some of her creations; which I have discovered over time on this same wall, which is abominably ugly when naked!
“Madame se livre”, a surprising first book as her incredibles collages
Very sincerely, I have rarely had the opportunity to discover a, art book dedicated to a Street Artist of this quality! This work has high spirits, plays with vocabulary and also gives the impression of belonging to another time.
If you like Madame’s works, this is a real gem.
This book with its very artistic cover is made up of three parts: stone, leaf and scissors. On a very light and poetic way it is offering us a deeper insight into the artist’s intimacy.
This First Edition is still available to order in some art bookstores or on Amazon for the modest price of € 35.
Madame is not only raging in the 18th arrondissement of Paris!
I was staring to have the feeling that we had in my district an artist just for us! What was my surprise when I found at the 2nd edition of Capucines des Arts, an ephemeral exhibition in a building in the process of rehabilitation, a piece of her artwork. There I said to myself Madame doesn’t anymore go up to scale to make marouflage in my district! She climbs especially with her colleagues in the world of Street Art; especially as for this exhibition, the curator was the well-known Christian Guémy Aka C215! Just that 😉
And a few months later, driven by a lively curiosity, I found myself again face to face with two other works of Madame; at Art42 the Urban Art Museum in Paris; which is also a school of coders for little geniuses in the making.
You get it, Madame has escaped from my little district and I am more than happy. But I was even more delighted to find her at the bar of Aérosol; ephemeral place dedicated to Street Art in the North of Paris.
If you want to know even more about this artist, you can follow her on her Instagram of course, or just visit her personal website!
If the discovery of Madame delighted you; do not hesitate to share! She deserves a few more visits than those of my neighbours!;-)
